Social and behavioral issues are rooted in neurological and cognitive differences. At SevenMinds Spectrum Consulting we believe that a solid and comprehensive understanding of these differences is necessary to develop effective interventions to improve skills and performance.
Parent Training
Not knowing how to help your child is often the most devastating feature of raising a special needs child. Our training program is designed to give parents a comprehensive understanding of neurological and cognitive features that contribute to their child's social, behavioral and academic struggles. Parents are given specialized instruction utilizing the latest scientific research. We teach practical strategies to respond to the unique needs of your child. Techniques are designed to improve your child's behavior and performance. More importantly, we focus attention on ways to to enhance the parent-child relationship. Both private training and training in small groups is available.
Psychoeducation (for young adults age 16 to 23 yrs.)
Developing independent living skills, establishing meaningful adult relationships and pursuing academic and career goals can all be a substantial challenge for a young adult living with a spectrum disorder. Research has shown that the more an individual understands about their condition, the better they are at managing it. We provide training to young adults so that they can better understand their social impairments and learning differences. We begin by teaching the neurological and cognitive features of their disorder and then discuss proven adaptive strategies so that they will be better equipped to develop social skills and self-management skills.
Professional Development
Staff in schools, community programs and agencies often struggle to manage the behavior and address the needs of individuals with spectrum disorders. We offer staff training and information workshops on how to best service and respond to the unique challenges of this population. All presentations include comprehensive explanations of social and behavioral disorders. Educational institutions are given suggestions for classroom and instructional modifications that are designed to improve academic performance and behavior management. All providers are trained in positive behavioral supports. Workshops focus on developing respectful practices and realistic solutions for managing behavior and developing skills.
Advocacy
Parent's and caregivers find direct assistance overcoming obstacles extremely helpful. We offer help navigating different systems (including the educational system) and aid in reviewing reports and materials. We provide instruction and support so that parents can develop and improve self-advocacy skills. Accompaniment to appointments is available to clients on a limited basis.
SevenMinds Spectrum Consulting works with parents, young adults, teachers and other professionals as requested. Inquiries for children under eighteen must be made by parents. All information about the family and child is kept in strict confidence without your prior consent.
